Martial arts that meet you where you are
Adaptive Kung-Fu was founded by Kenneth Brown, a 3rd Degree Black Belt with 15 years spent training and working with special needs individuals from all walks of life, across the full range of abilities and needs.
The idea
We change the form, not the standard
Most schools teach one version of a technique and expect every student to arrive at it. Some students never can, and they get told in a hundred small ways that the art isn't for them.
We work the other way around: we teach the principle a technique is built on, then find the expression of it that suits the body in front of us. A stance can be lowered, widened or taken seated. A strike can be re-angled. Footwork can be slowed, simplified or reordered. What doesn't change is that it stays real Kung-Fu, held to a real standard.
Our students range from young children to adults, from first-timers to experienced practitioners, with physical, cognitive and sensory differences of every kind. What they share is that they train — and they progress.
What training looks like
Every session starts with a conversation
Before anything physical happens, we talk. What do you want out of this? What is your body dealing with? What has and hasn't worked elsewhere? What helps or hinders your focus?
Then some light movement, so the instruction can be built on what's actually there rather than an assumption. Nobody is thrown in at the deep end, and a parent, carer or support worker is welcome in the room in any format — for some students that presence is what makes training possible at all.
Come and see for yourself
Tell me about the student and which format suits you — private, in-home, on-site or a group class — and we'll work out a starting point together.
